Vladimír Kopecký (* 1932) has been asserting himself on the Czech and foreign scene for more than 50 years as an exceptional glass artist and painter. Both of these positions are natural for him, and with the eagerness and taste of his own he constantly blends them and bends them into unprecedented positions. He is a graduate of the studio of monumental painting and glass at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design under Professor Josef Kaplický. Already at the end of the 1960s, he made a significant impact as an innovative painter, famous for his heavy geometric elements in his paintings, which he painted on ornamental linoleum. He then uses these pillars or beams in other media. They thus intertwine with his entire work as a certain burden, which enters into his objects and paintings in endless variations. With a predatory elegance, he conceives his glass objects with huge layers of color and the glass becomes a painting canvas for him, which does not spare anything. Vladimír Kopecký is shattering glass and there is no doubt that his so-called "ugly glass" has become the ultimate concept of expression in this medium. As in stormily expressive paintings and objects, Kopecký can transform into a completely different position and create at the opposite pole. Layers of color and sweeping gestures alternate with the rigor of lines and geometric shapes. The glass suddenly lacks that "ugliness" and makes the purity of the shape and the optical refractions of light in the vistas stand out. Vladimír Kopecký is a man of two faces. His work is therefore stormily calm.
