In response to this sad situation the non-profit the CZECH GLASS BLOK was established in 2016. Its mission is to increase awareness of the phenomenon of Czech art glass and support the upcoming generation of glass artists. To that end, in 2017 it organized its first exhibition, Beyond the Edge of Glass which presented five artists of the so-called “golden generation“ confronted with five of the youngest glass artists. The exhibition was two and a half months during which it was seen by 5,000 people. For an art exhibition in the Czech Republic, that is an enormous number. There are no two ways about it – the Blok’s first exhibition was a smash. However, given the venue – the Dancing House, which is a world famous Prague tourist attraction – a majority of the exhibition’s visitors were foreigners. The Secret of Glass exhibition in BB Center – 2018. As one of our goals is to stimulate interest in Czech art glass domestically, we decided to hold our next exhibition in a place where one may find foreigners from all over the world many of whom live and work here on a longterm basis mingling with mostly Czech citizens. BB Center is not one’s usual exhibition venue and installing sculptures in such a hectic place designed for a completely different purpose presented us with many challenges and limitations. However we were compelled by our dream of making the richness and impressiveness of Czech art glass accessible to the wider public many of whom may never have seen it before. For this reason, we were not guided by complex curatorial goals nor were we limited by either time or theme. Our selection of artists and works focused on the basic criteria of quality, range of techniques and diversity of artistic approach to glass. Therefore the exhibition includes the painted sculpture of Bohumil Eliáš Snr., who may be the most famous representative of this style in the world; blown glass from the workshop of Eva Fišerova; and polished cut optical glass pieces by Tomáš Brzoň and Eva Fišerová. The possibilities of joining glass to other materials, specifically heatresistant concrete, are explored in the sculptures of Luba Bakičova, while the sculptures of Josef Marek join glass and stone. This is a technique that was developed in the collaboration of Libenský and Brychtová and has been adopted by many Czech and Slovak glass artists. It is now the most prevalent technique in use in the Czech Republic. Its popularity lies in the fact that it enables limitless opportunities for artistic expression. It is represented in this exhibition also by the works of Malvina Middleton, father Jaromír Rybák and son Kryštof Rybák, Jakub Berdych Sr., Vladimír Bachorík, Jaroslav Wasserbauer, Pert Stacho, Bohumil Eliáš ml. a Matyas Pavlik.
